The double glazing industry really doesn’t like major sporting events. Look at how quiet it went during the World Cup in 2010. I know we didn’t really do that well and we didn’t make it far in the competition, but business was subdued until the end of the tournament. People were more concerned in buying beer from supermarkets or sitting in the pub watching the games.
This year, we not only have the European Championships but also the greatest sporting event on Earth, the Olympics to cope with. The Euros run from 8th June to 1st July and the London Olympics run from 27th July to 12th August.
Not wanting to sound unpatriotic or anything, but both these events could cause the industry a very quiet two months bang in the middle of the year, right when the industry is in full swing, making the most money, signing up the most contracts. Something we don’t need.
On top of that, there is an extended bank holiday weekend at the beginning of June to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
Maybe it won’t be that bad. Maybe after all the events of the summer allow people to go back to their normal daily lives, the industry might find that they are boosted by a surge of new business that otherwise would have come during June, July and August. The business might still come, but just later on. But if you’re like me and impatient, three monetary halting national events are just going to be inconvenient.
Want to know something ironic and confusing? I’m looking forward to all three events!
Hi, I have a slightly different experience… in the 6-8 weeks prior to a big event we see a surge in conservatory orders… and its a big surge… maybe enough to keep you going through the leaner following weeks…
The question is how do you capitalise on this… Olympic promotions?… I am currently working on a triple glazed self cleaning roof glass… thats a ‘jump’ up from the norm… and am also doing integrated speaker kits ideal for surround sound tv’s as a special offer…
Make Hay whilst the sun shines…
Be more postive DGB! ;)
Why not use the summer events in your marketing and advertising?
Why not run adwords running up to the events?
And like the guy above says, the increase in sales before the games (what you have been getting recently) will post likley be the same customers but have just started they search and buying early due to the summer events!
Try to get involved in a creative way and see if you can use these country wide events to your advance!
i have picked up more work due to the olympics, companies i supply units to have been in the olympic village installing commercial ally windows (adapting to survive i admit) and it has kept a lot of people in work who may otherwise be struggling for employment, these people will have money in their back pockets to spend to keep the economy moving as well as all the extra income coming into the UK with people coming from abroad to watch the games, if we adapt to try to maximise the potential of the influx of cash we can all… Read more »
