The double glazing industry really doesn’t like major sporting events. Look at how quiet it went during the World Cup in 2010. I know we didn’t really do that well and we didn’t make it far in the competition, but business was subdued until the end of the tournament. People were more concerned in buying beer from supermarkets or sitting in the pub watching the games.

This year, we not only have the European Championships but also the greatest sporting event on Earth, the Olympics to cope with. The Euros run from 8th June to 1st July and the London Olympics run from 27th July to 12th August.

Not wanting to sound unpatriotic or anything, but both these events could cause the industry a very quiet two months bang in the middle of the year, right when the industry is in full swing, making the most money, signing up the most contracts. Something we don’t need.

On top of that, there is an extended bank holiday weekend at the beginning of June to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Maybe it won’t be that bad. Maybe after all the events of the summer allow people to go back to their normal daily lives, the industry might find that they are boosted by a surge of new business that otherwise would have come during June, July and August. The business might still come, but just later on. But if you’re like me and impatient, three monetary halting national events are just going to be inconvenient.

Want to know something ironic and confusing? I’m looking forward to all three events!
