In my last post about Everest and them being featured on Watchdog on the BBC, the issue of their prices came up. The projects that people were paying for were in the tens of thousands, which, lets be honest, is way, way above what everyone else seems to be charging for their wares. So, this sorts of brings in to focus the issue of pricing.
What is a good price for a door? What is a good price for a window? Obviously there are going to be regional differences, the south being the more expensive part of our industry. And of course the differences of quality will have an effect. But in my opinion, for high quality door fit by qualified installers and with some good company background I think you can sell a door for easily £1000, maybe more, say £1250. An average sized white window, say 1800 x 1200 with two side openers should be being retailed at at least £500. Emphasis on the ‘at least’ part.
I would like to know what thoughts you have on this, and what you charge if you’re willing to share that sort of information!
Short one this one! I promise the next few posts will be a bit more in-depth!
How much, looks like i will have to put my prices up
Will have to put prices up too! Gave a price for a good composite door fitted of £890 the customer had a heart attack!
£850-£1000 for a fitted composite door, £550-£700 for a fitted panel door are the norm in London/South East
Have a local company in Kent selling 7 windows any size any amount of openings for £2378 inc vat, they use a decent profile, decent hardware and are A Rated as standard.
Wow, other reports I get from down south is that doors easily go for £1500! That is a lot less than I was expecting. Do you make a good margin on those prices?
A few companies will be able to get away with that but 99% of them won’t be able to.
Margin wise well a good comp door costs around 400 – £300 if you buy in a slab around £75 to fit it.
Peter – £850-£1000 we would be able to make a decent margin, more on the £1000 side than the £850 end. But £550-£700 for a PVCu panel door we won’t make a single penny. Take off surveyors charge, fitting, materials etc, there just won’t be any meat on the bone.
What I’ve found more and more often is that customers are expecting to pay at least £1000 for a good quality door. I believe that the industry is still selling it’s wares too cheap and not making the good profit margins it deserves.
DGB the issue you will have is that your an installer and as such are trying to make margin on margin, the prices i have given are fabricator costs selling into retail and as such will enjoy a better cost per product. Also remember if your buying a complete door set from the likes of Hurst, Door Stop these are supplied with a ten year warranty anyway so the costs are negligible. I have guys in Ilford selling a PVC door on a supply only basis for £180-£200 yeah they are making £20-£30 on it but they are shifting enough… Read more »
You dont really get more southern than us, our composite doors start at £790 inc fitting and our panel doors start at £578 inc fitting. Most of our customers are willing to pay more for the fancier glass etc.
Selling Price is not just about cost of main product, fixing materials, overheads etc and 10 year guarantee costs need to be taken into account. If pricing was done correct not so many Companies would go bust, therefore the industry needs a big increase and we would still sell the same amount.
Very true Garry. Long term costs like guarantees have to be factored into the price lists, which by judging by some of the prices out there, this isn’t happening. Too many price their products for the short term and not for longevity.
Thanks for your comment!
